Remote workers more likely to get laid off than replaced by AI — and also face more mental distress, data shows

According to a recent poll, remote workers are significantly more likely to be laid off than to be replaced by artificial intelligence. The poll indicates that remote employees face a higher risk of job loss compared to their in-office counterparts, with the gap being notable beyond simple AI substitution.

A separate study published in Science found that remote workers account for approximately one-third of the overall decline in mental health observed between 2011 and 2024. The study further noted that solo remote employees—those working alone without co-located colleagues—experienced the highest levels of psychological distress among all work arrangements.

The findings highlight two distinct challenges for remote workers: elevated layoff risk and worsening mental health. While the poll suggests that layoff decisions are not primarily driven by AI replacement, the Science study links remote work arrangements to increased isolation and distress.
