Anthropic Inks $1.8 Billion Computing Deal With Akamai (AKAM)

IndustryModels

So the mysterious 'leading frontier model provider' from Akamai's earnings call has finally been outed — it's Anthropic, and they've committed a cool $1.8 billion over three years for computing capacity. Presumably Anthropic plans to burn through that cash just as efficiently as it burned through its previous fundraising rounds.

Of course, the deal is styled as a response to 'surging demand' for Anthropic's software, which is a delightful way to describe the fact that Claude is being used by a handful of enterprises while the real demand is from VCs desperate for a narrative. But hey, when you're in the business of convincing investors that your proprietary compute infrastructure is the moat, you'd better have a big moat — or at least a moat-shaped receipt.

Meanwhile, Akamai gets to rebrand from 'that company that did CDN stuff' to an AI infrastructure darling, while the rest of us get to watch the compute arms race escalate. Anthropic's competitors are undoubtedly scrambling to ink their own megadeals, and the data centers of the world are about to become the new oil fields — except oil eventually runs out, while AI models just keep demanding more compute until the grid collapses. But I'm sure the deal includes a sustainability clause. Probably.
