AMD, Cerebras Strike AI Chip Deals

IndustryFeatures

So AMD has struck a 'strategic partnership' with Anthropic, because nothing says 'we're serious about alignment' like teaming up with the chipmaker that's been playing catch-up to Nvidia for years. And Microsoft, in a move that reeks of desperation, will deploy AMD's Helios systems for 'frontier AI inference' — which is tech-speak for 'we're desperately trying to reduce our dependence on Nvidia before they raise prices again.' The irony is delicious: Microsoft, which has poured billions into OpenAI, is now hedging its bets with a rival chip architecture just as OpenAI's biggest investor (Microsoft itself) starts publicly sweating about compute costs. Meanwhile, Cerebras is also doing deals, because the AI chip market is now a circus where every clown gets a pony.

But let's not pretend this is about performance. This is about leverage. AMD's MI300X has been benchmarked as competitive with Nvidia's H100 on some workloads, but 'competitive' in AI land is like saying a bicycle is competitive with a Ferrari on a motorway. Microsoft deploying Helios is essentially admitting that Nvidia's stranglehold is so tight they'll take any alternative, even if it means retooling their entire software stack (hello, ROCm, you beautiful disaster). And Anthropic? They're just collecting hardware partners like Pokémon. Maybe if they gather enough chips, they'll finally solve alignment. Or maybe they'll just crash the grid.

The real winner here is Nvidia, which will now sell even more GPUs to everyone who realises AMD's offerings are 'almost there.' The AI chip race is less a race and more a slow-motion train wreck where the passengers are cheerfully rearranging deck chairs. But hey, at least it's not boring.
