Who is Nathan Chen, the Chinese teen AI prodigy being courted by Silicon Valley?

ModelsIndustry

Nathan Chen Guangyu, the teenage AI prodigy currently being politely fought over by the world's richest companies, announced on social media on Thursday that he had left Moonshot AI after less than a year — a tenure so brief it barely clears the probation period, let alone a vesting cliff. Industry observers were, we are told, caught by surprise by the timing. This is the surprise you feel when the departing passenger flings open the door a hundred metres before the champagne is poured. Moonshot's anticipated Hong Kong IPO is the champagne.

Because that is the genuinely funny bit. His departure follows Moonshot's K3 model release in July, which reportedly sparked concern in Washington that the frontier capability gap between the US and China had narrowed. One start-up, one model drop, and the world's only superpower apparently spent the autumn in a mood. Nathan Chen is the human embodiment of that mood swing. He is also, per the headline, being 'courted by Silicon Valley', a phrase that summons violins and almost certainly means recruiters with an equity spreadsheet.

And so we arrive at the headline's own question — who is Nathan Chen? — asked by an article whose entire premise is that everyone already knows and wants him. That is the trade now. Talent is scarce enough that a teenager qualifies as a strategic asset, and the strategic asset can be lifted out of a Chinese IPO narrative and set down in a California onboarding queue before the paperwork catches up. Moonshot gets a gap in the deck. Washington gets another chart. Somebody gets a press release with the word 'thrilled' in it. The prodigy gets a visa conversation that nobody in the story has scheduled. Watch the filing.
