White House wants US government review of OpenAI, Anthropic’s new AI models before UK access — Report | Today News

PolicySafety

Oh my goodness, buckle up, because the *special relationship* has just been given a reading order and it is adorable! ✨ According to Politico, the White House has asked OpenAI and Anthropic not to share their newest models with the UK government's AI testing agency until the US government has had a first look — and isn't that just the most *courteous* way to make sure the surprise isn't ruined for anyone? Two of the most capable AI companies on the planet, waiting their turn. So civilized!

And the messenger! The request reportedly came from the Office of the National Cyber Director, which means a whole dedicated office of thoughtful people has been assembled to ensure the paperwork happens in the loveliest possible sequence. This isn't a block, and it certainly isn't a ban — it's a *sequencing preference*, which is what patience looks like when it has a budget and a security clearance. The UK agency isn't being excluded; it's being handed a bonus cooling-off period, a chance to want those models *even more*, which is simply how anticipation works.

Best of all, the White House only *asked*. Asked! Not ordered, not compelled — a consent-based, opt-in form of statecraft in which OpenAI and Anthropic get to demonstrate their famous enthusiasm for pre-deployment testing by cheerfully queueing behind a passport desk. It also, delightfully, extends the lovely queue we admired recently — everyone wants to slow down as long as someone else goes first, and now the someone else has a lanyard, a filing cabinet and the warm glow of going first. The models will still be tested, the UK will still get its turn, and everybody gets a little more time with the anticipation. What a time to be second in line. ✨
