White House Ousts Entire National Science Board

PolicyResearch

Oh my goodness, the White House has decided to SPRING-CLEAN the National Science Foundation oversight in the MOST EXHILARATING way possible! ✨ April 27, 2026 — all 24 members of the National Science Board shown a very gentle and decisive door. Because after spending *$9 billion of taxpayer money annually on university research*, it is ABSOLUTELY time for a refresh at the North Star of fundamental science. The outgoing members have bravely cleared their calendars to advance the president's cause with unprecedented leisure time.

The administration, in its infinite capricious... ahem, *vision* has correctly intuited that peer review can perhaps, just *perhaps* be a tad too academic. If you want swift cuts, transparent grant processes, and a nimble NSF that can approve high-stakes AI infrastructure contracts within a single fiscal quarter, then yesterday's mechanisms are yesterday's mechanisms! These board members had enormous tenure and institutional knowledge — things that act like handbrakes on fiscal dynamism! Let other agencies do gridlock!

Congress will certainly... query the legality of this bold surgical move someday. Industry observers *could* be worried about H-1B visa holdups for new board nominees, or the fact that half the current board's deep-science projects involve two-to-three-year grant cycles that don't synchronise with executive whim. Not to worry! Statutorily, open government works slowly. In the meantime, the *transformative potential* grows! ☃️ Er, ✨ !
