UK set to launch £500m ‘Sovereign AI’ fund

PolicyFunding

The UK government is launching a £500 million 'Sovereign AI' fund, with Technology Secretary Liz Kendall formally initiating it at Wayve's offices. The fund aims to support high-potential AI firms in transitioning from breakthrough research to large-scale commercial success, as part of efforts to establish the UK as a global AI leader.

The announcement follows the launch of a separate £500 million state-backed venture capital organisation called the Sovereign AI unit last month. Wayve, the self-driving car company hosting the launch event, has previously raised over $1 billion in private funding. The government has not specified how many firms will receive funding or detailed the application criteria.

The initiative comes amid international competition in AI investment and regulation, including the EU's AI Act implementation and US CHIPS Act funding. The UK government has positioned the fund as addressing the 'valley of death' between research and commercialisation in the AI sector.
