Trump to lift limits on Anthropic’s Fable model

PolicyModels

Well, that didn't take long. Because nothing says 'careful deliberation on national security' like caving after 'weeks of drama'—a phrase that suggests the whole thing was a soap opera rather than a serious policy disagreement.

Anthropic, the company that built its brand on 'safety-first' AI, is now getting its frontier model released to the world without those pesky export controls. The irony is delicious: the lab that warned about catastrophic risks is now the beneficiary of deregulation. Meanwhile, the 'drama'—which involved intelligence agencies, industry lobbyists, and free-speech absolutists—has been resolved by simply letting the model out. Who needs rigorous export regimes when you can just declare victory and move on?

So the global AI race gets another shot of adrenaline, this time courtesy of a White House that seems to treat export controls like a fad diet—tried briefly, abandoned when inconvenient. The rest of the world can now access Fable 5, which is presumably very capable of passing safety benchmarks (that it helped design). But hey, at least the drama is over. Time to find a new crisis to manufacture.
