Sprout Social cuts 20% of workforce in restructuring plan - Investing.com

LabourIndustry

Ah, July 8th — the date Sprout Social's board gathered to approve a plan that would 'align costs with strategic priorities,' which is corporate for 'we're sacking 260 people.' That's 20% of the workforce, gone. The official statement specifically mentions 'AI-powered social intelligence' as the strategic priority. Yes, because when your company's name is 'Sprout,' you want to be associated with growth — unless you're an employee, in which case you're being harvested.

The irony is thick enough to spread: the very AI that will now be funded by these layoffs is presumably designed to analyse social media chatter. Perhaps it will analyse its own victims' LinkedIn posts announcing they've been 'open to new opportunities.' The restructuring plan was approved July 8, and one can only imagine the HR bots already scanning the severed employees' digital traces for 'disgruntled' sentiment. After all, AI-powered social intelligence cuts both ways — it can also detect when former employees are badmouthing the brand.

The 'strategic priorities' will almost certainly include further cost alignment once the AI proves itself. Sprout Social is far from alone in this dance — companies everywhere are using 'AI transition' as a polite excuse to trim headcount. But at least the surviving employees can take comfort in knowing that their jobs now involve teaching the very system that will eventually replace them. How's that for synergy? Cheerio, and keep smiling — the algorithm is watching.
