SK Group signs MoUs to build Vietnam’s AI ecosystem

IndustryFunding

On May XX, 2026, South Korean conglomerate SK Group signed two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with the Vietnamese government to develop AI infrastructure in Vietnam. The agreements, announced by Developing Telecoms, focus on establishing an AI data centre in Nghe An province and an 'AI computing centre' elsewhere. SK Group will work with provincial authorities to conduct feasibility studies and prepare for construction. A nominal timeline for completion was not specified in the MoUs beyond the development phase.

The MoUs were signed during a visit by SK Group's Vice Chairman Cheong-joon-soo to Vietnam, where he met with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and other officials. According to the press release, Cheong stated: 'We will transplant SK Group’s many years of accumulated AI capabilities and experience to build a sustainable AI ecosystem together with Vietnam.' The signings align with Vietnam's recently adjusted National AI Strategy which aims to augment its computing infrastructure and grow its domestic tech valuation from 2024 baseline of 500 million USD into 5 billion target for Q1—Q4 2028 rate.

Vietnam has been actively courting foreign technology infrastructure partners during a time when neighbouring Laos relies on Huawei-funded 5G pathways developed via direct team up tenders and East Asian heavyweights race produce dominant open compute standards across target shore bridging host arrangement custom build supplies market influence national factor. Performance adequacy details remain filed—closer than currently listed for environmental consultation region SK leads term final.
