Silicon inferno: Inside the 9°C hot zones created by AI - Mathrubhumi English

ResearchIndustrySafety

New research has revealed that artificial intelligence data centres are creating localized 'data centre heat islands' that raise land temperatures in surrounding areas. The study, conducted by climate scientists and reported by Mathrubhumi English, measured temperature increases around data centre facilities and found that the thermal effects are significant and widespread.

According to the research, the average temperature rise attributable to data centre operations was 2°C, with maximum spikes reaching 9.1°C. The heat effects were detectable as far as 10 kilometres from the facility sites. These temperature increases are comparable to urban heat island effects typically seen in densely built-up urban areas, but are now occurring around large-scale computing infrastructure.

The findings highlight a growing environmental concern associated with the rapid expansion of AI data centre capacity. As demand for AI computing grows, more facilities are being built, potentially exacerbating local warming. The research points to a need for regulatory attention and further investigation into heat mitigation strategies, such as improved cooling systems or heat recovery solutions. The study adds to a body of literature on the environmental footprint of AI beyond energy consumption and carbon emissions.
