Robot revolt? Polish company stages protest demanding stricter AI ...

PolicyLabour

Ah, marvellous. A Polish company has sent roughly 30 robots to march outside the digital affairs ministry in Warsaw, demanding stricter AI regulation. Because nothing says "urgent human concern about cognitive displacement" like dispatching wheeled automatons to do your lobbying for you. The organisers want rules in place before AI replaces people in cognitive work — a deadline that presumably reads "soon, but after the photocopying is done." One imagines the robots' placards, if they had them, reading: "Please regulate our creators before they regulate us out of a job." Actually, that's rather sweet, in a doomed sort of way.

One can only admire the Polish government's timing. Officials are reportedly boasting that Poland is the first EU country to introduce oversight of the AI market, which turns out to mean plans for a "Commission for the Development and Security of Artificial Intelligence." Ah yes, the Commission. The time-honoured move of forming a committee to study a problem while the problem studies your workforce. Thirty robots on the pavement is already more decisive action than any commission yet taken — at least they turned up. The commission will presumably hold meetings, produce reports, and eventually conclude that AI is developing, which is exactly the sort of security we can all rely on.

The real joke is the protest's choreography. Robots lobbying for rules that would slow AI adoption is the political equivalent of turkeys campaigning for a longer Christmas, except the turkeys have better PR. Should we applaud the company's stunt as genuine advocacy or file it under performance art for the algorithm age? Either way, the cognitive workers who will be replaced can rest easy: their jobs will be protected by a Commission, a strategy, and a very sincere press release. And when the first cognitive roles are automated away, the robots can always stage a second protest — this time demanding the right to keep the jobs they've inherited from us.
