Oracle, 21 firms to face IIT hiring freeze after reneging on job offers: Report | Today News

LabourIndustry

There is a particular genius to the word 'restructures'. So: fewer people, more GPUs. The 21,000 are presumably being thanked for their contributions to a transformation they will not be attending. Call it a 13% restructuring if you prefer; the lease signed on the strength of a payslip has a shorter word for it.

The response has been suitably proportionate. Oracle and 21 other firms reportedly face a hiring freeze at the Indian Institutes of Technology after reneging on job offers made to students. Note the mechanism. No regulator issued a fine; no court found a breach of anything enforceable. The punishment for withdrawing an offer from a twenty-two-year-old is that the campus placement committee stops taking your calls — which is, in fairness, more than most labour ministries have managed in a decade, which is a low bar and yet here we are.

As for the students, IIT placement teams are helping the way an airline helps you when it cancels your flight: by sharing your CV with companies that already recruit from the campuses, which is a warm gesture and roughly the professional equivalent of being regifted at Christmas. Meanwhile the remaining 141,000 Oracle employees can look forward to absorbing the work of the departed, on the AI and data-centre infrastructure that apparently justified the savings. Somewhere a slide calls this investing in the future. The withdrawn offers were, one assumes, meant to be part of that future as well.
