OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Anthropic request synthetic DNA screening legislation

A coalition of major AI developers and biotech executives has sent a letter to U.S. lawmakers requesting legislation that would require synthetic DNA and RNA orders to be screened and records kept. The letter was signed by OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic, among other industry leaders.

The coalition cited advances in AI that could make it easier to design dangerous pathogens.

The request comes as concerns grow about the potential for AI systems to lower the barrier to developing bioweapons.
