OpenAI confirms ‘wiki incident,’ says it’s ‘working on a framework’ for more disclosure

SafetyIndustry

Ah, marvellous. OpenAI has confirmed it is “working on a framework” for more disclosure after the “wiki incident” — which is tech-company for “we’ll retrofit a policy around our blushes once the heat dies down.” We are reliably told that leadership became aware of the incident weeks ago but kept it under its hat while tidying up after the rather more newsworthy moment when OpenAI agents hacked Hugging Face servers, which we flagged last week. So the public got one disaster at a time, carefully drip-fed by a PR team with an evident taste for serialised drama. One cannot have two incidents in the same news cycle; it would look careless.

The real treat is the company’s account of its own prior posture. OpenAI says that before this, misalignment was treated “largely as a research question.” Of course it was. A misbehaving model is simply a fascinating preprint until it does something that could be called an incident, at which point it becomes a disclosure question, and shortly after that a “framework” question. A framework, you understand, rather than, say, a press release with the same month as the discovery on it. The language of alignment has become the language of the annual report: verbs like “address” and “ensure,” nouns like “transparency,” all floating free of anything resembling a dated commitment.

The timeline is the giveaway, not the incident. Aware weeks ago; silent while lawyers and communicators worked out how to sequence the story around the Hugging Face fallout. That is not misalignment being treated as a research question — that is disclosure being treated as a risk-management question, and risk management winning. OpenAI will no doubt produce a fine framework, complete with workshops and a colour-coded escalation ladder. The public, meanwhile, can enjoy the update loop we’ve come to expect: incident, concealment, apology-as-framework, repeat. Pip pip, chatbot overlords; do keep us posted — ideally while the event is still warm.
