OpenAI Breaks Free Of Microsoft, Expands AWS Partnership 04/29/2026 - MediaPost

IndustryFunding

OpenAI has 'broken free' from Microsoft, which is a bit like a caged bird noticing the door was always unlocked but the landlord just stopped charging for the key. Under the old arrangement, Microsoft paid OpenAI a revenue share for exclusive access to its models. Now that's gone, and OpenAI is free to hawk its wares on AWS and Google Cloud. How generous of Microsoft to let the bird fly — after all those billions. The real joke? OpenAI is still dependent on cloud infrastructure, just now it's a three-way bidding war for its compute needs.

The details are predictably mundane: the exclusivity clause is dead, and Microsoft will no longer kick back a portion of what it makes selling OpenAI's models. In exchange, OpenAI gets to run its models on AWS and Google Cloud, turning Azure into just another option. It's a classic 'don't put all your eggs in one basket' move — except all the baskets are controlled by trillion-dollar companies who will happily charge OpenAI for the privilege of running its own creations.

So what's the net effect? Cloud providers now all get a piece of OpenAI's action, which might lower costs for customers or might not — it's a cloud provider cartel, after all. Microsoft gets to stop writing cheques to OpenAI and instead start charging for compute. OpenAI gets to pretend it's independent while still being utterly dependent on hyperscaler infrastructure. Truly, a revolution in AI sovereignty. One can only marvel at the industry's ability to relabel a supplier shuffle as a liberation.
