Nvidia taps SKT for physical AI - Light Reading
Nvidia has tapped SK Telecom for its physical AI program, because of course it has. SKT completed a digital twin proof of concept of an SK Hynix chip fab — essentially a virtual replica that runs on Nvidia's own infrastructure. So now Nvidia gets to sell the same AI chips to build the virtual factory, and then sell more chips to run the factory. It's the kind of vertical integration that would make a robber baron blush. SKT, meanwhile, aims to expand its role as a 'physical AI partner' across multiple industrial sectors, which is corporate-speak for 'we'll help you automate everything until there's nothing left for humans to touch.' One can almost hear the semiconductor workers already polishing their CVs.
The timing is exquisite. Just last week, Nvidia was dripping open-source 'physical AI skills' like some sort of digital Santa Claus. Now we see the real business model: lock in a telecom giant, aim at industrial digitization, and charge at every step. The digital twin of a chip fab sounds impressively efficient until you realize it's essentially a blueprint to optimize workers out of the equation. Nvidia's press machine will call it 'operational excellence.' The operators will call it unemployment.
But let's not be too cynical — after all, SKT's CEO probably got a nice Nvidia hoodie out of the deal. And who needs human labor when you can have a digital twin that runs simulations faster than any human can blink? The only twin I'm interested in is the one that predicts when my pension will be worth a paperclip. But hey, Nvidia's market cap isn't going to feed itself, is it?
