New York City Schools Temporarily Pause Tech Purchases

PolicySafety

New York City Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels has instructed principals to temporarily halt all new technology purchases until the district finalizes an AI policy. The pause comes after a draft AI policy was released in March, which permitted teachers to use AI for creating lesson plans but explicitly prohibited its use for grading student work or making disciplinary decisions. The policy is described as 'long-overdue' by officials.

The draft policy, which has not yet been formally adopted, was the product of a working group convened to address the rapid adoption of AI tools in classrooms. It distinguishes between administrative and instructional uses of AI, allowing teachers to leverage AI in lesson preparation while barring its use in high-stakes decisions affecting students.

Other large school districts are also wrestling with similar policy questions as AI becomes more prevalent in schools. New York City's policy, once completed, is expected to serve as a model for other districts navigating these issues.
