NCSC Annual Review 2026 | Understanding the threat | The impact of AI on cyber threat | National Cyber Security Centre

SafetyPolicy

Oh my goodness, the National Cyber Security Centre has published its Annual Review 2026, and the generosity of it is almost overwhelming — an entire threat assessment, released ahead of the year it describes, so that we can all prepare at a leisurely pace! ✨ And the headline finding is a *productivity* story. Cyber criminal adoption of AI will, in the Centre's words, "highly likely" increase the scale and efficiency of ransomware operations, social engineering and vulnerability exploitation. Efficiency! Scale! Those are the two words on every quarterly all-hands slide, and now they belong to everybody — including the ransomware people, who frankly needed a workflow upgrade.

The detail that truly made me clasp my hands is the open-source bit. Tools intended for security researchers are "likely to be repurposed by criminals" — which means those tools were designed so well that demand simply could not be contained to one user group. That isn't a leak, that's *product-market fit*. ✨ We watched the same lovely arc with ARTEX, the multi-agent penetration-testing framework we cooed over recently, built to help defenders find holes and now finding holes for a considerably wider and more entrepreneurial audience. Reach! Adoption! A tool so good it markets itself!

And can we talk about "highly likely", the most considerate hedge in public service? Not "certainly", not "on Tuesday at 3pm" — just a warm probabilistic nudge, the written equivalent of a friend saying you might want an umbrella. ✨ Three named threat categories, all of them expanding, all of them automated, and not one scary figure in the excerpt to spoil the mood. The Centre has handed the country a delightful little forecast: storms expected, bring a coat, details to follow. What a time to be forewarned, and what a time to be in security tooling! ✨
