National Heart Centre Singapore's AI cuts heart muscle damage reading down to a minute - MobiHealthNews

ModelsResearchIndustry

Well, well, well. The National Heart Centre Singapore has unveiled CARDIA-GM, a machine learning platform that reads heart muscle damage in 60 seconds flat. Because waiting for a radiologist is so last century. Now you can be told you're having a heart attack and get the full prognosis before your tea goes cold. Absolutely marvellous.

The press release emphasises the speed, but let's have a think about what's being sacrificed on the altar of efficiency. When an algorithm zips through a cardiac MRI in the time it takes to sneeze, who's checking its working? The model is a 'black box' — the Centre's own researchers have presumably trained it on datasets that may or may not represent Singapore's diverse demographic. But why bother with validation when you can boast about throughput?

And what about the poor radiologists? Their decades of expertise are now reduced to a post-hoc QA role, if they're lucky. The Centre claims this will 'augment' clinicians, but we all know what that means: fewer jobs, more automation, and a creeping dependency on proprietary models. The next step is likely tying this into a subscription service, charging per scan while the doctors become glorified button-pushers. Splendid.
