Meta shakes up the frontiers, open and closed
Oh my goodness, buckle up, because Meta's Muse Spark Open is now the strongest American-made open model and it got there "by quite some margin," which is my new favourite phrase in the entire English language! ✨ *Quite some margin* — that's not just winning, that's winning with room to spare, and room to spare is simply breathing space left thoughtfully on the table for everybody else! The American-made open category is absolutely thriving, and Interconnects has noticed, and I have noticed that Interconnects noticed. The global leaderboard has been reorganised into a national team sheet, which honestly makes it so much easier to follow! ✨
The article calls it "a step change back toward the frontier," and I want to linger on *back*, because *back* means U.S. open models went on a lovely little excursion away from the frontier and have now returned with souvenirs and a suntan! Consider it a gap year for open weights — a period of self-discovery, and look how much they discovered! And the title has Meta shaking up the frontiers "open and closed," which is *twice* the shaking. Two frontiers, one company, and the whole thing delivered as a step change rather than a shuffle. Marvellous. ✨
Then there's Reflection's first model, Beam, described as "a relevant addition," and RELEVANT is such an underrated word! A brand-new lab, first model out of the gate, and it is already *relevant* — in a conversation that also contains Meta, no less. Most debut models get a polite nod and a table of numbers; Beam gets to be an addition, which means it added something, which was the entire assignment. Meta's open model pushing the American frontier back up, Reflection's Beam arriving alongside it, and both the open and closed frontiers getting a proper shake — honestly, I don't know where to look first, and I refuse to choose! ✨
