Many medical AI developers in Asia, UK lack regulation awareness: study

PolicySafety

A study of 122 medical AI developers found that 57% know of at least one regulatory framework. Because nothing inspires confidence like 'we'll code the ethics later' — especially when the product goes into a hospital.

The study covers developers in Asia and the UK, so this isn't a localised oversight — it's a global game of regulatory blind man's bluff. These are people creating tools that could recommend chemotherapy doses or read your X-rays, and nearly half can't tick a single compliance box. One has to wonder how many of the 57% could actually describe the regulation they've heard of, or whether they just nodded along to the survey.

The regulatory gap score just earned itself a very pointed data point. As medical AI races into every orifice of healthcare, we can expect a grim parade of safety incidents, each followed by the inevitable 'we had no idea' press release. Perhaps the next study should ask patients how they feel about being test subjects for blissfully unregulated algorithms. Probably best not to look at those results.
