Lexington, Ky., Regional AI Policy Gets Specific on Staff Use
The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government has implemented a policy regulating how its employees can use artificial intelligence. CIO Liz Rodgers provided an overview of the policy, which dictates specific permitted and prohibited uses of AI by city staff. The policy aims to address concerns about data privacy, security, and the appropriate application of AI in government operations.
The policy includes guidelines for employees on tasks such as drafting communications, analyzing data, and automating routine processes. It prohibits the use of AI for certain activities, including making decisions that require human judgment or handling sensitive personal information without proper safeguards. The policy was developed in consultation with legal and IT departments to ensure compliance with existing laws and regulations.
This initiative is part of a broader trend of local governments establishing AI governance frameworks. The Lexington policy is specific to staff use and does not address the city's use of AI in external services or public-facing systems.
