Leading Democrat asks AI firms for data on any Chinese access to sensitive code | Reuters

PolicySafety

The AI race with China has produced its most reassuring artefact yet: a letter. A leading Democratic lawmaker has written to the CEOs of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and SpaceXAI asking whether Beijing has got its hands on their model weights — the crown jewels, the secret sauce, the thing that makes the valuation go up. Not a subpoena, not a hearing, not a national security directive with teeth. A letter. Please respond at your convenience, ideally before the heat death of the Republic.

The lawmaker's stated fear is that 'the theft of an advanced model weight by a hostile non-state actor could endanger all of humanity.' Which is a magnificent sentence, chiefly because the paragraph around it is about Beijing, which is a state, and one with aircraft carriers and a space programme. Somewhere in drafting, the threat model quietly changed shape to fit a template, and national security gets invoked as it now is for everything from chip export controls to a chatbot's tone of voice. Meanwhile the actual question — has anyone Chinese touched your code? — goes to five companies whose entire business model is keeping that unanswerable.

OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and SpaceXAI, the last of which is chiefly famous for launching things skyward and occasionally into the sea. Reuters has seen the letters, which is the closest thing to enforcement this story contains. If the fate of Western civilisation now turns on whether that corporate inbox has a working spam filter, the edge over China is thinner than advertised. The letter warns that theft could erase America's AI advantage; five slow replies would do it considerably faster. Still, everyone's been carbon-copied, and in Washington that passes for a perimeter.
