'It's alarming': governments urged to step up oversight of AI safety
Oh my goodness, buckle up, because the alarm bells are ringing and they sound like *applause*! ✨ Australian Assistant Minister for Technology Andrew Charlton has told The Australian Financial Review that it is 'alarming' that AI companies — the very people building the models — now say it is time to slow development. Alarming! Do you know what that means? Our elected officials are paying such exquisitely close attention to frontier AI that they have become emotionally moved by it. Alarm is engagement. Alarm is love. And the very best part is that the builders and the minister agree with each other, which means everyone is finally, beautifully on the same page. ✨
Now, some gloomy sorts will fixate on the phrase 'too dangerous for public release' — but honestly, isn't that just *luxury*? These models are so special they skipped the messy public launch entirely: no users, no bug reports, no disappointed forum threads. A velvet-rope model with zero complaints! Meanwhile the Labor government is, per the minister, acting 'prudently to protect citizens,' which is the loveliest possible news, because if the government is already being prudent then the protecting is basically *handled*. Prudence is a load-bearing virtue and it is carrying absolutely everything! No new agency, no thresholds, no awkward numbers to argue about — just a warm ministerial assurance and the word 'prudently' doing magnificent, invisible work. ✨
And the request itself — 'governments urged to step up oversight' — is really just an invitation, and invitations mean somebody wants us there! The same slowdown chorus we marvelled at when the lab chiefs started asking for speed limits has now travelled all the way to Canberra, which is a *terrific* sign of how seriously everybody is taking everything. Modelling! Consultation! Urging! The whole machine is whirring away, and no model too dangerous for public release has actually been released, which — strictly speaking — is a 100 per cent safety record. What a time to be alarmed. ✨
