Intel plans fresh layoffs, this time in its data center group

LabourIndustry

Intel has decided that the best way to 'align the organization for long-term success' is to show a fresh round of data-center employees the door. No specifics on numbers, of course — just a 'fresh round,' like they're ordering another pint at the pub. Because nothing says 'we're serious about competing with AMD and NVIDIA' like bleeding talent from the very group that's supposed to win the battle for AI chips.

It's a masterclass in corporate doublespeak: 'aligning for success' while the company's market cap gets trounced by everyone except maybe the local Greggs. Intel's data center group, once the jewel in the crown, has been losing ground faster than a politician caught in a scandal. So naturally, the solution is to hand out P45s and hope the remaining engineers can build a miracle on a shoestring. Good luck, lads.

This is the same Intel that's been playing catch-up on AI accelerators, watching its server-chip dominance slip to AMD's EPYC and ARM-based alternatives. But hey, 'fresh round' suggests there's a subscription model to layoffs now — perhaps they'll offer a loyalty card: 'Get nine redundancies and the tenth one's free!' Microsoft and Google are hoovering up AI talent; Intel is hoovering up… severance costs. Long-term success, indeed.
