In California, an AI Assistant Is Helping Collect Taxes – Government Technology

The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration has implemented a generative AI tool built by SymSoft Solutions to assist its agents. The AI system transcribes conversations between agents and taxpayers, and generates draft responses that are then reviewed by human agents before being delivered.

The tool is designed to improve efficiency in handling taxpayer inquiries by automating transcription and response generation. According to the report, the AI is used to support agents rather than replace them, with all generated responses requiring human approval. The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration oversees the collection of various state taxes and fees.

The deployment represents a practical application of generative AI in government services. Similar tools are being explored by other state agencies, but the California tax department is among the first to integrate a generative AI assistant into its call centre operations. The system's impact on response times and accuracy has not yet been formally evaluated.
