I lost my job to AI. Here’s why mass layoffs won’t transform your company - Fortune

LabourIndustry

Mark Quinn, Head of AI Ops at Pearl, has bravely informed us — via a Fortune op-ed — that companies truly transforming with AI are retraining employees rather than simply sack-in-your-faceo-ing redundancy runs. A magnificent discovery from the realm of bleeding obvious statements, made about four minutes too late to help the people booted by Meta.

Quinn notes that replacing workers without a plan leads to wisdom haemorrhage and systemic incompetence. Marvellous. Encourage US megacorps that ignored this homily yesterday to maybe consider it for next next? And Pearl? Ah, yes — the very consultancy that likely helps firms 'transform' by digitising processes. No conflict there. Course not.

The op-ed concedes that no amount of whistle-blowing feels great if two per cent are retested and twenty per cent plus sacked. As far death-haunts go, it's almost tender. But given that the economic incentives still say layoffs command stock pops, employers will scan Quinn's piece out of turn, sigh, and reach for redundancy letter generator. Oh, things them, those things.
