Human-AI teams improve healthcare only when clinicians stay in control

A scoping review published in *npj Digital Medicine* has found that human-AI collaboration in healthcare improves outcomes only when qualified clinicians retain decision-making control. It concluded that removing or reducing human oversight leads to worse patient outcomes and undermines the potential benefits of AI.

The review also cites risks of over-reliance on AI, including automation bias and deskilling of clinicians.

They emphasize that AI should augment—not replace—clinical judgment. The findings add to growing calls for careful, evidence-based integration of AI into medicine, reinforcing the importance of keeping humans in the loop as AI adoption accelerates.
