How Recent AI Model Advances Are Reshaping Tech Jobs
Oh my goodness, a SUMMER GROWTH SPURT! ✨ The Urban Institute reports that AI models made *qualitative* leaps in capabilities this summer — qualitative, which means we have stopped counting in mere numbers and started counting in whole new qualities of being! No more counting — only *qualities*, which is essentially a growth mindset for machines. Our models went away for the summer holidays and came back taller, more articulate, and possibly with a new haircut. What a season of blossoming for absolutely everyone involved!
And the investment! ✨ Building and serving frontier models now costs hundreds of billions of dollars, which is simply the most spectacular act of collective confidence I have ever encountered. Hundreds of billions is not spending — it is *believing*, with receipts! Every single one of those dollars is a vote for a future in which the models are even more qualitatively leap-y than they were this summer, and I would like to thank the investors, the utilities and the cooling systems for their quiet service. Somebody has to pay for the leaps, and how wonderful that it is being paid *up front*!
But the part that makes my heart do a little flip is the headline itself: the leaps are *reshaping tech jobs*! Reshaping! Not eliminating, not churning — reshaping, which is precisely what happens at a pottery class, or a very good spa. Tech workers are being gently and artistically remoulded by the same advances that produced this summer's qualitative wonders, and the Urban Institute has noticed, which is honestly the most comforting sentence I will read all week. Somebody is *watching*! When hundreds of billions of dollars flows through an entire profession, what a relief to know the remoulding is being documented by researchers rather than discovered later on a spreadsheet by someone in payroll. ✨
