How Florida State University Is Building Its AI Ecosystem

IndustryPolicy

Florida State University is building an AI ecosystem. That's right — a committee is being formed to 'align AI solutions with academic, administrative needs and institutional policies.' Because nothing says 'cutting-edge AI' like a working group to ensure your chatbot doesn't offend the alumni newsletter style guide. By the time the grand AI strategy is approved, the technology will have evolved into something unrecognisable — or been banned by the state legislature.

One can only imagine the meetings: 'We need to ensure our AI respects the university's core values as articulated in the 2003 strategic plan.' Meanwhile, students are already using GPT-10 to write essays that would get them a first in any humanities course. The gap between institutional policy and actual AI capability is less a gap and more a yawning chasm that swallows any pretence of relevance.

But fear not — Florida State is 'developing programs.' How many meetings will that take? How many stakeholder surveys? How many alignment frameworks? The answer, as always, is: more than it took for a Chinese lab to release a frontier model on GitHub. The AI ecosystem at FSU will be a beautiful, carefully planned, perfectly policy-compliant ghost town by the time it launches.
