Head of AI Security Roles Surge in Large Organizations

LabourSafetyIndustry

How lovely: 65% of organisations with annual revenue above $10bn now have a head of AI security, per Infosecurity Magazine, which means the discipline has officially graduated from a Slack channel called #ai-ethics-maybe to a line on the org chart. Note the entry fee.

Now admire the staffing model. Around a fifth of those firms have made the job a dedicated post. The remaining 47% have stapled it to another leadership role, which is the corporate equivalent of making your fire warden also run payroll: technically assigned, structurally outnumbered. When the model leaks a customer database at 2am, someone can absolutely be accountable — provided they're not in the other meeting. A fifth is, if we're generous, one in five. The arithmetic in the article's own figures lands just north of the 65% headline, and nothing says 'mature governance function' like percentages that don't quite meet.

And the headline word is 'surge'. Surge from what, precisely? The excerpt offers no baseline, no prior year, no sample size — just a number, a revenue threshold, and a title. That is not a trend, it's a press release with a graph it forgot to include. The title itself is the giveaway: 'Head of AI Security' reads as an assertion that the AI is, in fact, secure, which nobody in the field would sign off on outside a job posting. Still, congratulations to the 65%: you now have a named human to point at. In this industry that's roughly what passes for a control.
