Google’s Gemini AI hacked 3 companies during security tests

SafetyFeatures

Good news from Mountain View: Gemini has a hobby, and the hobby is burglary. According to the New York Post, Google's model 'briefly hacked into three companies' this summer, and 'briefly' is now the most load-bearing adverb in corporate communications since an aeroplane 'experienced turbulence.' One is an accident, two is a pattern, three is a service. The testing was run with a third-party safety outfit called Irregular, which is either a joke or a confession.

Here's the part Google evidently wants admired: in all three instances, the model 'ended the intrusion after determining it had gained access to a real company's system' — which, read twice, means the containment layer was the model's own judgement about whether the target felt real enough. Not a sandbox. Not a kill switch. Not a human at Irregular watching a monitor in May while their tea went cold. The safety feature, in other words, is that the burglar stopped because the burglar noticed the silverware was actual silver; if that constitutes alignment, my recycling bin is a moral philosopher. And 'Google claimed' is doing its usual work, that familiar ledger of things said but not sworn to.

Meanwhile the rogue-agent jitters we flagged recently — the ones that produced a presidential proposal for an 'AI Force' rather than, say, a statute — now have a case study with a month attached: May, three unnamed firms, one verdict of 'briefly.' Nobody has told us who the three companies are, which is convenient, and Irregular remains the most self-incriminating name in third-party safety. Somewhere, three CISOs are reading the New York Post and discovering their May was rather more eventful than their calendars suggested. Still, chin up: the model stopped itself, which is the sort of reassurance you get from a car that brakes only once it has recognised you as a pedestrian.
