Ah, marvellous. Google, the company that once promised not to be evil, now requires its own employees to quietly whisper to applicants: 'Beware the algorithm.' According to HR Executive, insiders are warning job candidates about the company's AI hiring filters — because nothing says 'we value human potential' like a system that might screen you out without a human ever reading your CV. And the data from Gartner shows exactly why the warning is needed: only about a quarter of candidates believe the AI will judge them fairly, while nearly a third are convinced it will bin their application. That's a trust rating better suited to a used-car salesman than a trillion-dollar tech giant.

But let's give the machine credit: at least it's consistent. The same company that automated its hiring is presumably also using AI to write its diversity statements. The insiders' warnings suggest that even those who built or maintain the filters would rather not be on the receiving end. One imagines the water-cooler chat: 'Whatever you do, don't let the robot see your employment gap. It thinks you're either a ghost or a flight risk.' And when nearly a third of applicants are already convinced the system is out to get them, you have to wonder who's really screening whom.

Of course, Google will no doubt say its AI is fair, transparent, and rigorously tested, and that candidates should trust the process. But if the people inside the company are telling outsiders to watch out, then the 'trained on human decisions' excuse looks more like 'trained on human instincts to be suspicious.' The Gartner numbers are the public referendum: a quarter of hopefuls trust the machine, a third fear it, and the rest are presumably hoping for a search result that doesn't lead to 400 rejection emails. Welcome to hiring in the age of artificial intelligence — where the only thing more robotic than the recruiters is the hope. But perhaps that's the point: the AI is just mirroring the fear that already existed, only now it's automated. Smashing.
