Google DeepMind Pentagon AI contract resignations: Researchers exit over classified military deals; all you need to know | Company Business News
Two people who were paid to worry about AI safety at DeepMind have now stopped being paid to worry about AI safety at DeepMind: Alex Turner resigned in June, Andreas Kirsch in October. Turner's July blog post contains the line that ought to make a general counsel wince — senior management had insisted Google would not sign the deal, and then the deal got signed. That is not a governance failure so much as a governance pantomime, with the giant "oh no we absolutely shan't" head followed by the signature and the classified annex. Somewhere a slide deck still says "responsible AI" in a tasteful typeface.
Kirsch told the BBC that Google's governance and oversight are "not sufficient or meaningful enough to deploy AI safely and responsibly in military and classified settings," a sentence in which the word "meaningful" is quietly doing all the work. Not absent, you understand. Present. Documented. Minuted. Possibly even laminated. Just not meaningful. And observe who is walking: Turner spent more than two years on AI safety, Kirsch is an AI researcher — these are the people whose job description was, in effect, to be the awkward question in the room. Once the awkward question tenders its resignation, the room becomes wonderfully efficient.
Meanwhile the Livemint headline appends "all you need to know," which is either journalism's most confident promise or its laziest. What you need to know, apparently, is this: two researchers objected, two researchers left, and the contract proceeded exactly as scheduled. No procurement paused. No signature unpicked. The classified settings remain classified, which is jolly convenient for everyone except the person who has to explain them to a congressional committee in three years' time. Google will presumably file this under "talent attrition" and issue a values statement about responsible defence, because the alternative — admitting that the safety staff were the brake and the brake has been removed — is not a slide anyone wants to present. Cheers, and do enjoy the explainer.
