Exclusive: UN launches "AI for Good" commission
The commission aims to connect those building advanced AI systems with political leaders as international regulation becomes increasingly fragmented.
The creation of the commission responds to the growing patchwork of national and regional AI regulations. According to the announcement, the group will work toward a unified set of guidelines. The commission includes executives from major AI firms as well as government officials from multiple countries, though the full membership list has not been disclosed.
The "AI for Good" commission is the latest UN effort to address AI governance. Earlier this year, a UN panel issued a preliminary warning that AI could cause catastrophic harm, though that panel's work is distinct from this new commission. The first meeting is scheduled to last two days, with subsequent sessions planned in the coming months.
