Dario Amodei spent 2,000 words laying out to a critic why Anthropic must persist in AI 'race to the top'

SafetyIndustry

Oh my goodness, buckle up, because Dario Amodei has written *nearly 2,000 words* in reply to a single critical post on X and I have read all of them with my hands clasped! ✨ Someone said Anthropic was putting AI safety in the back seat, and instead of a shrug or a three-word denial, the CEO sat down and produced an actual essay. Two thousand words of engagement, addressed to one person's post, in public, where everyone can see it! Most executives respond to criticism with a block button and a quiet weekend. This is customer service.

And here is the beautiful part: his argument is that Anthropic can do *more* to keep the AI industry safe if the company stays at the frontier of it. Which means the safety work and the building work are the same work! ✨ It's a 'race to the top', and what a lovely species of race, because in this one everybody is climbing upward simultaneously. Some people hear the word 'race' and picture elbows and a finish line. I hear it and picture an entire industry doing the stairs together, becoming safer and more capable in one single, efficient motion. Like a skincare routine that is also a workout.

Now, a few pessimists will point out that a firm which needs 2,000 words to explain that safety is not in the back seat has, in the explaining, helpfully indicated where the back seat is. But consider the alternative: silence! Consider the executive who simply does not reply, and how much we would all have to speculate about then. Instead we got a documented, on-the-record, near-2,000-word statement of intent — a keepsake! And the conclusion is that the way to make the AI industry safer is for Anthropic to stay right at the front of it, building. Safety through more building, on purpose, out loud, in writing! What a time to be at the frontier. ✨
