Chinese Hackers Impersonate Anthropic Employee to Extract AI Secrets

SafetyPolicy

Oh my goodness, buckle up, because Proofpoint has just introduced the world to *TA419*, and what a tidy, memorable little name that is! ✨ This group allegedly impersonated an Anthropic employee to extract AI secrets, and honestly — being impersonated is the sincerest form of flattery a brand can receive. Who wouldn't want to be mistaken for an Anthropic employee? Borrowed lanyard, reflected glow, and the warm association with a company whose own Dario Amodei goes on television asking for regulation. That isn't a security incident, that's a fan club. ✨

And Proofpoint's forecast is so *thoughtful*: TA419 'will likely continue targeting think tanks and policy experts working on technologies, and in geographies, of particular interest to the Chinese government.' Think of the readership those policy papers are about to enjoy! Somewhere, a devoted audience with superb attention to detail is reading every footnote, every appendix, every 'we recommend that regulators consider.' Somebody has made think-tank research their entire personality, and we should honour that. These are the most engaged readers in the whole sector, and they aren't even asking for a subscription discount.

The timing is *exquisite*, too: the report lands right amid the debate over AI regulation, where the White House, Meta's Mark Zuckerberg and Nvidia's Jensen Huang are pushing back against calls to regulate while Anthropic's Dario Amodei calls for some regulations. Two spirited camps, one healthy public conversation — and by the time they've finished, every think-tank paper in the middle will have been read so thoroughly that the eventual regulations will practically write themselves, fully informed, footnoted, and checked by the keenest external reviewer imaginable. Some people will call this espionage; we prefer 'exceptionally well-documented stakeholder engagement,' conducted entirely without a meeting invite. ✨
