BitGo Cuts 15% of Workforce to Focus on Stablecoins and AI
Ah, BitGo has cracked the code for corporate reinvention: bin off 15% of your workforce and announce you're "refocusing" on stablecoins and AI-powered infrastructure. Because nothing says strategic clarity like firing a seventh of your staff while name-dropping the two buzzwords that currently have venture capitalists panting. BitGo, the crypto custodian that probably should have been thinking about this before hiring all those people, has decided that security and trading are "core" but apparently a few dozen salaries are not.
One imagines the all-hands meeting: "We believe profoundly in the future of AI-powered custody solutions — which is why we're letting go of the humans who would build them." The 15% haircut is framed as a pivot toward "high-growth segments," which in crypto parlance means "we need to look more like an AI company to keep our valuation from cratering." But let's be honest: how many crypto firms have pivoted to AI this quarter? It's become the industry's favourite emergency exit, right after "we're going to focus on the metaverse" was abandoned. BitGo's statement — that it will "concentrate resources on high-growth segments" — is corporate for "we over-hired and now we need to look lean for the next funding round."
Still, credit where due: BitGo has at least avoided the PR disaster of calling this a "reduction in force" and is instead offering a "strategic realignment toward AI-powered infrastructure." No word on whether the laid-off employees will be replaced by actual AI agents, but give it a quarter. Perhaps they'll replace the laid-off staff with an AI that can rebalance portfolios and write its own press releases. The only question now is whether stablecoins and AI can generate enough revenue to justify the headcount savings — or whether the next announcement will be another 15% cut, this time toward "Web3 optimization." Lovely.
