The Australian Attorney-General's Department has implemented two controlled AI tools for staff use: Microsoft Copilot Chat and Google NotebookLM.

Copilot Chat is a generative AI assistant integrated with Microsoft 365, while NotebookLM is a Google AI tool designed for summarising and analysing uploaded documents.

The move reflects a cautious approach to generative AI adoption within the federal government. By limiting the tools to 'protected' data and maintaining oversight, the department aims to balance productivity benefits with security requirements. Similar controlled pilots have been initiated in other Australian government agencies as they explore safe AI integration.
