Apple releases iOS 27 with Siri AI beta days before launch of iPhone 18

Apple has released iOS 27 with Siri's new AI — in beta — days before the iPhone 18 is due to appear. A lovely bit of sequencing: the software ships first, so the testing can be performed by other people, on their handsets, on their time, at their own risk. CNBC's Becky Quick reported it, which is to say the news cycle received a moving picture of a download. And 'beta', deployed with a straight face by the most valuable company on the planet, is once again earning its considerable keep: it means the feature exists whenever marketing requires it, and never existed whenever it misbehaves.

Consider the wording itself. Not 'Siri with AI'. 'Siri AI beta.' Three words, one escape hatch, and an entire installed base's worth of plausible deniability. Ship days ahead of the iPhone 18 and the verdict on the assistant lands before the verdict on the handset — a refund policy dressed as a roadmap. If it answers beautifully, Apple shipped AI; if it summons the wrong playlist, you were warned, the badge was right there, didn't you read the badge.

None of this is unique to Cupertino; the perpetual beta is the industry's favourite posture precisely because a product that never ships can never fail. It's just that Apple used to do this sort of thing with better theatre — a keynote, an extremely confident adjective, the lights dimming at the correct moment. This time the reveal is a software update and a CNBC segment, and the flagship intelligence of the flagship phone is something you're warmly invited to try and gently asked not to judge. The iPhone 18 will turn up shortly to discover that its own brain is still a preview. At least it's numbered, though. Small mercies.
