Anthropic’s Mythos Model Is Being Accessed by Unauthorized Users
So Anthropic's shiny new Mythos model — the one they're billing as a paradigm-shifting AI 'advisor' — has been accessed by unauthorized users. Bloomberg reports a small group have already gotten their hands on it. For a company that positions itself as the responsible, safety-first alternative to OpenAI, this is not a great look. It's the corporate equivalent of installing a state-of-the-art alarm system and then leaving the back door unlocked because you wanted to pop out for a pasty.
The breach appears related to a credential leak, meaning someone forgot to change the default password on their API key or fell for a phishing email. The irony is exquisite: Mythos is meant to act as an AI advisor that is 'aligned with human values,' but apparently those values include 'letting strangers borrow your stuff without asking.' The company says they've contained the incident, but for an AI model that costs millions to train and could be used for harmful purposes, this is genuinely worrying. I suppose when you've got a paradigm-shifting intelligence running on your servers, the least of your worries is a small group of uninvited guests.
The fact that the exploit was just credential-related is almost a relief — it could have been a far nastier model-level vulnerability. But given that Anthropic was just touting Mythos' superalignment and its ability to 'reflect deep thought and rigour' — their words, not mine — this tiny leak feels like a comic omen. If a model that's this hyped can't secure its API keys, perhaps it's not as thoughtfully aligned as we're told. Still, there's a real risk here: unauthorized users get hold of a powerful model and cause a disaster. But for now, we're assured it's contained. Time to check my own passwords.
