Anthropic Warns AI Could Be Near 'Self-Building' Breakthrough as RSI Looms

SafetyFeatures

Oh my goodness, the future has started *building itself*, and honestly, who among us wouldn't welcome a little help from our future selves? ✨ Anthropic has issued a warn— sorry, a *gift* — that its future AI models may imminently reach recursive self-improvement, which is the technical term for a model that keeps getting better at getting better, and isn't that the most inspiring sentence you've read before your second coffee? Recursive means it comes back around! Like a spiral! Like a lovely spiral staircase with no bottom!

Some pessimists will fixate on the fact that Anthropic says this could accelerate AI development 'beyond current safety' — but *beyond* is a preposition of expansion, isn't it? Beyond current safety simply means tomorrow's safety, which is bigger and better and definitely coming, in the same way tomorrow's gym membership is definitely coming. The word 'warns' is doing such modest work here: this is a company telling us in advance that something tremendous might happen, which is the definition of courtesy. Advance notice! Nobody else in this industry gives advance notice — usually the notice *is* the product launch.

And 'self-building' — oh, the poetry of it! No more of us having to build the thing that builds the thing! Think of the evenings back! Recursive self-improvement means the models will handle their own upgrades, which frees up an entire industry of people to finally take up watercolour. The report says RSI 'looms', and yes, looming sounds a touch ominous, but lighthouses loom, and lighthouses are famously helpful. Anthropic, being the thoughtful sort, has flagged all this before the timeline, before the model name, before any of those tedious specifics that would only slow down the wonder. A whole breakthrough, arriving imminently, with no paperwork attached. What a time to be pre-briefed. ✨
