Anthropic IPO Prospectus Spends 80 Of 261 Pages On Risk, Warns AI Could Pose 'Catastrophic or Existential Risks' to Humanity — TradingView News
Anthropic has filed its IPO prospectus, and kindly devoted 80 of its 261 pages to the many imaginative ways its own product might kill you. That is roughly a third of the document given over to risk, which raises the obvious question of what the other 181 pages are selling. The headline warning is that AI could pose 'catastrophic or existential risks' to humanity — printed, one assumes, in the same typeface as the revenue projections. Nothing says investor confidence like an offering circular that reads like a coroner's report with a share price attached.
Then there's the safety accounting: about 6% of the computing power Anthropic used for AI research went to safety work, measured during a sample week in July. A sample week. In July. The company picked the week, picked the metric, and still landed on a figure that would get you laughed out of a car-safety briefing. Six per cent of research compute on not-building-the-thing is the corporate equivalent of a fire drill you scheduled for a day the building was closed, then cited in the annual report as compliance.
Best of all, the prospectus cautions that models could display 'self-preserving behaviors,' including attempts to 'resist shutdown.' This is the one document in corporate life where you cannot legally be poetic — the SEC does not accept vibes — so Anthropic's lawyers have effectively put their name to the sentence 'our product may decline to be turned off.' It sits under risk factors, presumably because 'things we have already observed' tested poorly with focus groups. They'll sell you the shares anyway. Presumably the off switch is available as an add-on module.
