America isn’t prepared for world models
Russell Wald, director of policy at Stanford's Institute for Human-Centered AI, stated that policymakers may be unprepared for world models, which will require different governance than large language models. He noted that debates will change when AI can affect the physical world in a different way. The comments were made in a Politico newsletter discussing the implications of advancing AI systems.
World models are AI systems capable of simulating and interacting with physical environments, such as infrastructure or supply chains. Wald's warning highlights a potential gap between technological development and regulatory frameworks. He emphasized that current governance approaches designed for LLMs may not suffice for these more complex systems.
The context includes ongoing discussions about AI regulation, with recent editorials and policy debates addressing similar themes. Wald's remarks contribute to a broader conversation about adapting policy to keep pace with AI capabilities that extend beyond digital text generation into real-world applications.
