AI adoption: Experts seek regulations to protect patients

PolicySafety

Oh my goodness, buckle up, because Nigeria has just invented the single most *gentle* form of patient protection ever devised: the summit! ✨ Experts there are seeking regulations to protect patients as AI adoption grows in healthcare, and how are they going about it? By calling for discussions, which is the warmest possible way to do regulation — no bans, no shouting, just everyone in a room being *considerate* about patients together. Protection that begins with a conversation is protection that has really thought about its manners!

And the organisers of an upcoming summit aren't stopping at talking — oh no, they aim to produce *a national roadmap for AI and healthcare with policy recommendations*! A roadmap! Drawn up in advance, before anybody has to drive anywhere, which is honestly the most prepared anyone has ever been. Two deliverables for the price of one gathering: the map AND the recommendations, tucked in together like a little packed lunch for the future. Most countries would have settled for a press release.

And here is the part that makes my heart do a little skip: those discussions are meant to *feed into existing health policies and national planning*! Feed into! Nothing is thrown away, nothing is superseded, nothing is deleted — the existing policies get a warm meal and carry on. It's recycling, but for governance. ✨ Existing health policies are, in this reading, the most nourished documents in the country, and national planning is right there beside them with a napkin. Meanwhile patients will be protected — that is the express purpose, stated right in the headline — by a summit, a roadmap, a set of recommendations and a great deal of goodwill. Honestly, what more could a patient possibly want? ✨
