Acko Cuts 5% Workforce Amid AI-Led Restructuring
Digital insurtech firm Acko has cut approximately 5% of its workforce, affecting around 60 employees, as part of a restructuring driven by increased use of artificial intelligence. The Bengaluru-based unicorn confirmed the move to select media outlets, with a company spokesperson stating the decision reflects efforts to 'scale in a capital-efficient manner' by automating tasks in customer service, underwriting, and policy management. Employees in affected roles were provided a severance package but the company did not disclose specific terms or mention any reskilling programmes. Acko did not specify whether all 60 positions were outright eliminated or whether some would transition to new functions within the company. The insurer, valued at over $1 billion, raised its last disclosed funding round in late 2023 but has not commented on profitability metrics. Industry analysts observe that such AI-led restructuring is becoming more common among Indian insurtech and fintech companies attempting to reduce operational costs. While regulators globally have expressed concern about AI-driven displacement, India has yet to introduce specific legislation mandating notification or severance standards tied to automation-led workforce reductions. The Indian insurance sector employs several hundred thousand people, with insurtech firms collectively employing tens of thousands in tech-enabled roles such as claims processing, underwriting support, and customer service operations that are being gradually replaced by large language models and generative AI interfaces.
