A mysterious free AI model is impressing developers. And nobody knows who made it.

Ah, marvellous. Another week, another anonymous gift from the gods of AI, and this time it's Ox Alpha — a free 'stealth model' that materialised on OpenRouter from an unidentified third-party provider. A million-token context window, no known manufacturer, and a name that sounds like a bovine dietary supplement. OpenCode, the platform cheerfully hosting the experiment, assures us the model will be free for a week with 'near unlimited usage,' which is exactly the kind of vaguely legal phrasing you want from someone whose address you don't have.

The numbers get better. The provider claims capacity for 100 trillion tokens per day — a figure that is either a bold statement of intent, a misplaced decimal, or the technical specification of a very angry supercomputer. Stripe CEO Patrick Collison, a man whose job it is to know when something is a good deal, has declared Ox Alpha 'very impressive.' How reassuring. The last time a free mysterious entity claimed to be very impressive, it came with a Trojan horse and a dinner invitation. But who are we to quibble? An anonymous model with a million-token memory and a week of free lunch: what could possibly go wrong, apart from the obvious?

And the key detail, the one we're supposed to whisper around the water cooler, is that nobody knows who made it. Not the developers queueing to use it, not OpenRouter, not Mr Collison. The model is a stray from the AI kennel — no collar, no vaccination records, no owner stepping forward to take credit for its brilliance. We will all plug our code, our data, and our secrets into this great unknown, because the price is right and the context window is massive. And when the anonymous benefactor turns out to have a name, an agenda, and a memory of everything we typed, we'll look back fondly at this week when a free model seemed like a good idea. Pass the aspirin.
